About LaserSafe PC

This is a must for organisations making frequent use of Lasers or LEDs.  An Innovation in Laser Safety Analysis, LaserSafe_PC is a programme which vastly simplifies the process of establishing the safety or otherwise of Laser situations.  It is Maintained and Supported by the highest authorities.  It covers all Laser situations, display, laboratory, industrial, diffuse reflections (including LED source).  Enables those without expertise to assess Laser situations for safety.  Greatly simplifies and speeds up the process of safety analysis for those with expertise.  Enables speedy evaluation of how to rectify an unsafe situation.  Takes the tedium out of calculations which involve a lot of mathematics, searching through tables and applying correction factors. Operates, in conjunction with the manual, as a fast training package in Laser safety. LaserSafe_PC is used by the BBC for assessing the safety of all laser situations at the Corporation.  LaserSafe_PC is being developed for use as a training exercise and experiment for University students.  Enables basic laser product classification.  Currently being used by major institutions, nationally and internationally for assessment of laser related situations.  Now the  de facto  standard software for Laser Safety.

Latest Release

The recent Amendment 11 (now referred to as Ammendment 1) of EN 60825-1 ( Amendment 2 of BS-EN 60825-1 ), has resulted in differences to the way measurements are taken when classifying diffuse reflection or extended sources.   IEC 825-1 does not incorporate these differences, so the new release of  LaserSafe_PC features a new menu which allows selection of either EN 60825-1 or IEC 825-1 as the working standard for the calculations. The AEL / MPE section has also been extended to include diffuse reflection or extended sources.   Other small enhancements have been included throughout the software, in keeping with requests and suggestions from our large (and growing) body of users and our own policy of continuously enhancing the quality and functionality of our software.

NEWS

Windows 95 / 98 / 2000 Edition of LaserSafe PC  -  We are now at the last stages of beta tests on the Windows 95 / 98 / 2000 version of LaserSafe PC.  The experience gained from writing   LaserSafe PC LDE   is being incorporated to ensure a solid and reliable product.
***   We had anticipated a late 2000 release, but with the changes in the EN-60825 standards and the complexity involved in these, we held back to incorporate these.  Thourough testing is a vital part of the development!
   The wait is now over!.

***** LaserSafe PC Windows to be launched at Photonex 2001 *****  -  The Windows 95 / 98 / 2000 version will be launched at Photonex 2001 (17, 18 October 2001) on the Lasermet Ltd Stand (D12).   This version is in conformity with the new release of EN-60825 has all the functionality of Version 2.5 -  plus more.   The DOS version (v2.5) will be discontinued.   Please note that all existing DOS versions have become obsolete as a result of the new release of EN-60825.

*** Laser-pointer risk negligible say researchers ***   -   The risk of retinal damage caused by class 3A laser pointers is negligible, claim researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, US.
Dennis Robertson and co-workers tested three different laser pointers on three patients.   Each person was exposed to a 1, 2 or 5 mW pointer for up to 15 min.  Their retinas showed some slight abnormalities after exposure, but no signs of any significant damage to the retina, cornea or lens.
Robertson wrote in the December 2000 issue of the journal Archives of Ophthalmology: "The risk to the human eye from transient exposure to light from commercially available class 3A laser pointers that have powers of 1, 2 and 5 mW seems negligible."
He adds that the potential for the pointers to cause eye damage has been exaggerated.  However, he also warns that more powerful devices could pose a more significant risk.     (5th January, 2001)

*** Crown Court Judge Rules "Laser Pointers not Dangerous" ***   -  In a landmark ruling, during an appeal against a previous Magistrates ruling in a case between Trading standards Officers and importers of Laser Pointers, a Manchester Crown Court judge ruled that ANSI classified IIIa laser pointers were not a dangerous product and did not warrant a sales ban imposed on the importers of these items.
For the defence, expert witnesses Professor John Marshall of the Rayne Institute and Jim Webb of G.L. Services put forward a strong case to indicate that likelyhood of accidental injury through misuse of laser pointers was not possible and intentional damage was also very unlikey.
This has, hopefully, has paved the way to a much more pragmatic approach to dealing with the "Laser Pointer Threat" graphically "exposed", but clearly misunderstood, by the media, several years ago.  Most of the public fear of lasers has been derived from film and TV portraying their use as a cutter or "death ray".  The time has come that a more positive approach to the realities of laser light is put forward by the publicly available media

Windows 95 Laser Display Edition of LaserSafe PC is now available.  -  The Laser Display Edition of LaserSafe_PC for Windows 95 / 98 is now available.  This is officially endorsed by E.L.A. (Entertainment Laser Association) and is intended to be the de facto software package that will facilitate hazard calculations for both Laser Display Operators and E.H.O. Inspectors.  The product is available to both members and non-members of  ELA.     **** LaserSafe PC LDE is 2000 Compliant ****

LaserSafe_PC LDE is available NOW from both G.L. Services and Lasermet Ltd.

DEMO GREMLIN   -   We are impressed by the quality of the people who download our Demo Software!!  It has been brought to our attention that the CW Fibre Optic Source Details Screen shows that the Laser Spot Size is 37 m.  This is indeed wrong and was tracked down to a typographical error in the results lookup table;  the result, of course, should have read 37mm.  The typo is now corrected and the updated version is now available (as of March 14, 1999).

** OPEN FORUM **   -   We are in the process of designing a page specifically for open debate on safety related matters concerning lasers.  If anyone has any particular request about the format of this we would be most pleased to receive them.
